3    Instagram Strengths and Weaknesses

Strengths

·       Instagram is a powerful storytelling medium using photo, video sharing and hashtags. Because of this, consumers can swipe through quite quickly, meaning that businesses can have more of their posts seen in a lesser time than consumers would take to read posts and blogs.

·       Businesses can use Instagram as a form of segmentation, as Instagram is the e-tool of choice for the younger consumer.  Hashtags can be used on associated ads, to enable companies to aim at a targeted audience.  Clever use of hashtags can help in search engine optimisation.

·       Instagram is the fastest growing e-tool and has a huge audience reach; companies have the potential of reaching over 800 million consumers, who every day ‘like’ over 4.2 billion posts.

·       As Instagram is specifically designed for smartphones it has a high consumer engagement rate.  Instagram allows businesses to have a contact button which makes it quicker and easier for consumers to contact companies, and companies can respond easily.  This connection means consumers are more likely to trust businesses’ products and services.

Weaknesses

·       The images that companies use have to be able to catch the audience’s attention, if images are not engaging, consumers will skip the post in their feed and not read the company’s message.

·       Instagram limits the images to a square shape, posting images outside of this shape will cause parts of the image not to be shown, making it look unprofessional.

·       As Instagram is based on smartphones, consumers will expect quick responses, and as they carry their smartphones almost everywhere, they will constantly be able to check for a response.  This can be time consuming for companies, who will need to ensure that staff are employed to respond quickly and efficiently with the consumer.

·       Instagram has its limitation for advertising, companies cannot fully explain their products or services, bullet points have to be used in the form of hashtags.
